Puzzles

Another puzzle by the Bram Cohen (the same who created BitTorrent) and Oskar van Deventer: the Geary cube.

Some of their previous puzzles are very interesting like the JumblePrism or my two favorites, the RotaCubes and the Bramboules.

Oscar van Deventer creates stranger things: the WimTvane or the Topsy Turvy are just two examples

He also has a beautiful adding machine for kids.

I like puzzles. Puzzles good.

Pig farming is... strange

I love TED presentations, and I was curious about one of the latest ones: 10 things you didn't know about orgasm by Mary Roach.

The presentation is very good, but starting around 10m25s there is a sequence about pig farming in the Netherlands that make me laugh out loud.

Weird stuff.

Update: well, chickens are even worse (PDF)...

Internet archeology

This last Saturday, I was at Barcamp PT and started to talk with Nuno Moreno about games, specially online quest-style games.

I remembered an old game, the Heineken Challenge, that was very popular at least here in Portugal. I'm not sure when it was online but it seems 1996 is the correct year.

The problem is that 1996 is like 1BG (1 year Before Google), so I can only find about the new Heineken set of lame flash games.

Anyway, if anybody here can find a reference to this game, please leave a comment, thanks!

Who needs a pony when you have a fairy?

The Django people came up with a new logo for the project, a magical pony.

Its nice and all, but it doesn't beat the "Best logo of all times, in the Software category"-contest. That prize is still clearly in the hands of SQL::Translator.

Sorry guys, but bonus points for effort. The color of the first version was a step in the right direction.

Helping my friends...

... get a good laugh at my expense. The next PerlMongers meeting I attend will be a lot of fun.

if you search for my name in the 2001 Google index, the first hit is a patch for the PHP build system.

Talk about the past coming back to haunt you.

Priceless

The guy who won $275.000 on the Google Android contest (english translation):

Asked what he would do with the cash, his response was “I guess I could invest it in my software company, but first I want to port PicSay to the iPhone.”

Priceless...

(via daring fireball)

Update: the PicSay author clarifies the whole story.

Perspective

From The economics of high-end prostitutes:

Spitzer spent more than $80,000 on high-end prostitutes in one year. That's a lot of bank withdrawals.

I would say that its a lot of deposits, but hey.

IETF Wayback machine

So the IETF has a solution for all our bandwidth problems, taking us back to 2000 levels.

No, its not a super-chip design for a mega-hiper-refixe-router, its something that you can find installed on most PCs and Macs.

But fear not, as you can read at the bottom of the article, the porn industry is well aware of the technology and they will take care of bringing us back to the future in no time.

He can mary again!

Well, the good news is that he can mary and get divorced two or three times now.

Update: for those who where wondering what Net::XMPP2 has to do with all this, lets just say that copy&paste are two techniques that I seem not to have mastered yet.

yoda operator: do, or do not. there is no try

Ok, this way cool.

As such, the JSR-666 expert group recommends the introduction of the yoda code-word to the Java language. This keyword commands that the virtual machine "Do, or do not", where there is no corresponding try.

[...]

Warning: the yoda keyword should only be used in places where the presence of an exception would indicate the Java Runtime Environment is misconfigured or broken. Misusing the keyword may cause a great disturbance in the Virtual Machine, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced

I so want this in Perl.
